Incredibly slow download/upload speeds on VPN. Help needed.

Hi. I purchased a vpn today (Private Internet Access) as in my country (Australia) the government started a spying policy where every Aussie's emails, private chats, searches and downloads are monitered, tracked and stored in a clear and present breach of privacy.

however without the VPN active I get 100Mbps Downloads and 40Mpbs Uploads on NBN

after switching on the VPN it drops down to an absurd 4Mbps Download and 0.7Mbps Upload.

Is there a way I can increase speed in the settings? I am new to this and would love some advice from someone more VPN savvy.

The bottleneck is clearly the VPN. It sounds like the only way to increase up and down speeds is to use a different service for VPN or take your chances with surfing the net without one. Does this VPN service provider have multiple servers that you can access? If so, try a different one to see if speeds increase. BTW, 4 Mb/s is pretty decent and allows you to do most basic things pretty fast on the internet unless you are DL'ing large files or streaming high def video. The up speeds are kind of pathetic, though.

I am starting to think my stock standard router I got free when I signed up for NBN may not handle VPN's. (it only has single band 2.4Ghz Wifi so it would be a very cheap router with little to no features) I plan on getting a new (and rather expensive) router and I hope the speed will improve then.

I am cautious of free VPN's as I have heard about lots of free VPN's being honeypots allowing even more spying and privacy breaches.

I have the same issue. I have worked out that my ddwrt flashed router is not up to the job of processing the AES-256-CBC encryption cypher quickly enough, hence why I am seeing a major drop off of non-vpn traffic vs vpn encrypted traffic.

This is via AirVPN btw.

I've only ever heard good things about PIA. Was with them for awhile but switched over to express-vpn as I like their vpn software and speeds. Either way I agree with svalbaard, your router might need an upgrade.
