would it be smarter to buy windows xp(20$), then the windows 7 upgrade disk(20$) from ebay [considering i can refund from paypal if anything is wrong]. rather than buy a whole new windows 7,8 disk?
Probably not a good idea because many of the licences you see on sale are fake and although they may appear to activate, they will fail later and be declared non-genuine.
A Windows 10 system direct from Microsoft won't break most banks although I know money isn't always available. Ayt least you would know it's genuine and gets you right up to date.
You make an extremely good point, but money really is the problem. i have bought all of the parts for a computer other that an OS, i was considering using SteamOS for the time being, since i will be mostly gaming. But um using a 80GB HDD i had from an old laptop. windows 7 only uses 20GB of space but SteamOS requires a 500GB hardrive. http://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown

I can't see why Steam couldn't install to the 500GB disk you'll set as D: - most programmes will go where they're told to. Hopefully a gamer with some Steam/Valve knowledge will come along on this one.
