my short question is will it hurt anything to stop dban mid process while it wipes an hdd?

having built a new rig this year, im giving my old rig to my sister who wants to play stuff with her boyfriend. also having never had to wipe an hdd before, i did some googling, and found dban and some instructions. so i loaded it in to a bootable flash drive and got going with the "gutmann" option as was suggested. however, its gunna take like 80 hours. its a 1tb drive, by the way. so, its been running for about a day and a half now and looks like it wont be done by sunday evening.

now, im not worried about nsa levels of wiping, i just wanted it nice and clean for us to start from scratch as we're gunna tear the system down, clean, and put it back together to teach her about it.

my common sense is telling me that a wiped drive is a wiped drive and nothings gunna break if i just shut it off, but i figured i'd ask. will it hurt anything to just power it down before its completed its 35 cycles?

Hey there, cosmoji.

It sounds like you've started some kind of low level format. I'm not really familiar with the program you're using or the "gutmann" option, but if this is a low level format, stopping it shouldn't cause any issues. I've just tried a similar process with a different program, although I've waited only 2 minutes before I've stopped it. Basically you might have to initialize the drive and partition (if necessary) and format it, as if it was a brand new internal drive. I doubt that you'll do any harm to the HDD itself in any way, but if you want to be 100% sure, you could contact the software's customer support and ask about that.

Hope that helps.
