Hi I recently figured out that the current gpu I have is a very low tier gpu and I at the time I did not realize I could use Nvidia on an AMD build. So hence why I am looking to upgrade to an Nvidia graphics card. My budget is around 300-400 and the only card I've considered is the gtx 970

Any Suggestions? Also I need an new PSU for my system, I believe my cpu is struggling.

PS. I am quite new at building pc so please be gentle ;)

Price is the same, performance is the same at 1080p.
At higher resolutions, the R9 390 is superior.
The R9 390 has 8 GB while the GTX 970 has 3.5 GB useful memory and 0.5 GB of extremely slow memory.
As far as I can tell from what we've seen up until now, The R9 390 is better suited for DX12 in terms of performance.
The R9 390 is significantly more power hungry than the GTX 970.
The GTX 970 has some features that the R9 390 doesn't have, and vice versa.
There's G-sync vs Freesync

The biggest conclusive argument for longevity is the 3.5 GB vs 8 GB. The more speculative part is DX11 vs DX12 performance. Even though I personally believe the performance is already a conclusive win for the R9 390 under DX12, lots of people are on the...

The GTX970 is good, also if you're searching for a new PSU, looking at the specs i think you should go with a 650 or a 750 watt PSU. EVGA/Seasonic/Antec make good PSUs for not a lot of money.

Is it a bad idea to go with an 1000w if I plan to upgrade in the future? Because I don't want to make a purchase and realize I need more power. Thanks for the response!

If you specifically want nVidia, the GTX 970 is the best choice in your price range.

However, despite the R9 390 using more power and being AMD, I would suggest it over the GTX 970, especially if you (plan to) play at resolutions higher than 1080p.

Your 600W Rosewill should suffice with either of them, depending on the model.

I don't plan on playing on resolutions higher than 1080p but I want something that will last awhile and that will be best for my system. Are there any significant differences between the two cards? Price and performance?

Even though I personally believe the performance is already a conclusive win for the R9 390 under DX12, lots of people are on the fence about it. The main reason to go for the GTX 970 is power consumption.
