router dilemma: Asus (AC66-R or -U) or Netgear 6400, best 1750AC router? or does it matter??

Hello everyone,

I'm having a hard time deciding on what to get for a router. It's for a small home with just a couple of devices, no more than 6 probably connected to it. My current internet plan is 75mbs speeds, I might upgrade to 150mbs, but the current plan is working okay for now.

Before I begin with my questions, please note that I'm only asking about applications in real world environments. Personally specs don't really mean much if something is 200mhz faster or 100-200mbs faster, if the operate more or less the same for all practical purposes.

I'm really looking for the people who've used these (or even better) both devices, to see what the difference is.. if any.

So my first questions is this:

At first I was thinking of going with an AC1900 router, but after reading about them, for all practical reasons there doesn't seem to be much of a difference in a 'real world' environment. Is a 1750 and a 1900 AC router, more or less, the same? or worlds apart?

My second question is:

If in case, the 1750AC routers are more or less not too much different than the 1900 ones. Which do I go for?

I'm looking at netgear's 6400 vs asus's AC66 (R or U, retail or web models)... (I don't think TP-link as some of the fancier features as these two guys, so I'm probably not going to go there)

Is there really a difference between the two? (performance-wise) Or is it just aesthetic and the router settings UI is a little different?

It seems like the internet likes both of them, with half saying asus and the other saying netgear... So.. hmm..

Thoughts?

Thanks.

For most clients those two routers will be the same. Why? Because there is very little WIFI AC hardware in use. Most devices are still N devices. From that perspective the two router will be the same. Most devices still use 2.4Ghz because it has better coverage. Again, those two routers will be the same to a 2.5Ghz wireless N device.

you want the netgear R6700. You dont need an ac1900, and netgear generally has easier to use interface than ASUS. Also the r6700 is newer and better than the r6400 and even cheaper on amazon.
