So.. What kind of CPU would be best suited for Linux? I have looked in Skylakes and they are powerful and efficient. Although the require DDR4 (mobo) I can live with that. What would be the best CPU (Intel) under $250? I saw the i3 4710, i5 4590 and i5 6400 and all are nice. What do you think? Is it worth going for the Skylake CPUs in 2015-2016? Is DDR4 needed?

Thanks!

Solution
You could go with the newer Skylake and DDR3, but there isn't a large selection of DDR3 motherboards; if you don't already have DDR3 memory, then you should go with DDR4. Unless you have a tight budget, building on the latest platform is recommended. The best CPU for Windows will also be the best CPU for Linux.

What are the usage of that build? If the only use your linux as general media consumption, browsing, and light gaming cheapest cpu will do. And don't forget DD4 cost higher than DDR3 for unseen performance boost.
