Hello,

Due to a move, I've had to purchase a wireless adapter for my computer that I usually connect via ethernet. I did a little bit of shopping around, but needed it fast (it takes an extra 2 weeks or so for it to ship because I am at the moment living overseas). I went with the TRENDnet TEW-807ECH.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156506

Instructions were to first install drivers, then turn off and install the adapter itself. As I put the driver disk in, my doorbell rang, so I had to run get it, and when I came back my computer was at the Windows 10 "blue screen of death". I tried restarting (whenever this happened in the past a simple restart brought it back to the OS), but it kept blue screening. Eventually I launched Windows startup repair. It said it wasn't able to find any problems, but after that I restarted it and it booted up fine.

Sorry for the long backstory, but just wanted to give all the info I could. So now my problem is that (after downloading the drivers from the TRENDnet site, and then plugging in the adapter) the computer doesn't seem to recognize that there is anything even plugged into the PCIe port (I have an ASRock motherboard that comes with hardware monitor/viewing software and it says that port is empty)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for reading and for your time.

4times4equals12,

Sorry you 're still having the troubles.

As you have a very good system specification and seem to be knowledgeable, my assumption was running more towards the idea of problems with Windows 10 as a new OS. When I checked the Trendnet site for firmware or driver updates, I was surprised that the list of supported OS is:

Release Version: 1.01
Release Date: 06/2015
Initial Release

OS Compatbility/Driver Version(s):

Windows XP 32/64-bit: 2012.9.0212.2014
Windows Vista 32/64-bit: 2012.9.0212.2014
Windows 7 32/64-bit: 2013.11.1031.2014
Windows 8 32/64-bit: 2013.11.1031.2014
Windows 8.1 32/64-bit: 2013.11.1031.2014

> and the latest...
4times4equals12,

Given that the system is not recognizing a component in the PCIe slot occupied, I'd suggest eliminating the mechanical possibilities:

1. Important: Make sure the system BIOS is the absolutely latest.

2. Reseat the TEW-807ECH carefully.

3. Try another peripheral in the slot to verify that the slot is working.

4. Try the TEW-807ECH in another system.

My tendency is to think that the problem has to with the system crossing several technological time zones. I 've had several older systems that I've upgraded and teaching the old dog new tricks is sometimes the most difficult task. I also don't have a lot of trust in recently released MS OS's to have it all sorted. At the same time I also have a lot of trust in Trendnet.

Let us know what happens!

Cheers,

BambiBoom

Unfortunately I don't have a different computer to try the adapter in, and don't have another peripheral to try in the slot. I did try re-seating the adapter and made sure the BIOS is up to date, but that didn't fix the issue. Any other ideas?

Also ever since installing (or trying to at least :p ) this adapter, I've had nothing but trouble with my computer:

1. Because I am out of the country, I use a VPN to connect to services I had available back home (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, etc.). Ever since trying to install this adapter, whenever I try to run/reinstall the program (Private Internet Access) I get this error "OCRA - Failed to get temp file name."

2. Now when I try to launch Nvidia GeForce Experience, it says "Unable to connect to NVidia - Try again later" As a result I cannot download driver updates.

3. Steam/Counterstrike: Global Offensive: When I try to launch this game, it starts to run "first time setup" (odd, considering I played this game just a couple days ago and it worked fine). During that setup, it tried installing DirectX, and failed. I tried manually running the installer as Administrator
(C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive\directx_installer\dxsetup.exe)

and it spit out this error: http://imgur.com/rManbkp

That's all I have noticed so far... thanks for the help so far!

> and the latest driver is 6/15- before the Release of Win 10 at the end of 7.15.

So, it may be that the TEW-807ECH is trying to run on the Win 8.1 driver. When installing were you able to select a Windows 10 driver?

The PIA problem appears to derive form the way PIA randomizes the location of the temporary file and /or the Firewall and /or the Internet security software treating the various Ruby programmes as malware:

VPN's are having to become more and more clever for security reasons. If you are having problems accessing content from another country as it's blocked to outlanders, and it's not the Ruby subprograms being blocked, you might try configuring an L2TP connection- a sort of VPN within the VPN:

The problems with Steam/Counterstrike: Global Offensive are beyond my experience, but if NVIDIA Direct X drivers are not installing you might again look into Win 10 compatibility.

I think I'll be giving Windows 10 a miss- as I did Vista, 8, and 8.1. A lot of this is due to the constant upgrade icon, I spent a couple of hours purging that from all my systems just on principal. When MS goes to such desperate lengths to give something away for free, I'm reaching for my tin foil hat!

Cheers,

Ah...I guess this must have been an oversight by me then.. When purchasing the adapter I took note that the product description stated "Supports Windows operating systems". I assumed that included Windows 10. A little sly on their side, as there was nothing indicating it wasn't supported, but I suppose they weren't lying (and now that I look at the download page for the driver it clearly lists all versions except for Windows 10.

As for for PIA and Nvidia, thank you for your advice with those as well. Since my last reply, I did a complete system reset, not sparing anything except for my files for school and some photos (as suggested by users on tenforums.com. Apparently, upgrading the system from Win7 to Win10 can cause a really buggy OS, and just doing a clean install supposedly irons out a lot of those bugs. And I must say a lot of the bugs I was experience disappeared, and overall things feel much snappier, after installing graphics drivers, etc. of course).

Anyways, thank you very much for your help. I guess unless TRENDnet support informs me that there will be an updated driver for Windows 10 anytime soon, I'll just send back the TEW-807ECH and look for one that supports Windows 10.
