I am building a gaming rig on a tight budget. I am using msi z97 gaming 5 mobo with i5 4690k cpu.
I am really confused about choosing the memory for this rig.
if I add 2x4gb c10 corsair vengeance dual channel memory now will i be able to add 2x8gb dual channel in the future. Is 8gb enough for high end gaming ? If i go with 1x8gb stick now will I be able to add another 8gb stick in the future

Im also confused between kingston hyperx fury c10 1866 mhz or crosair vengeance c10 1600 mhz. Hyperx comes with a 5yr warranty whereas corsair comes with life time also hyperx is significantly cheaper!
should I go for 1866mhz over 1600hz
Thanx in advance for your valuable thoughts

It's generally advised to avoid mixing two different models of DRAM however it may be possible to get them to work together. It's a gamble and ultimately up to you but it has been done before successfully.
To tell if you are running dual channel, download CPU-Z, click on the memory tab and it should say it there.
PnP stands for plug and play and it's a feature on the hyper x fury lines. It basically configures your RAM to run at the fastest clock speed on boot up. It still supports XMP

all that i've read; unless it is an AMD APU; memory speed really doesn't have much improvement or at all.
someone even posted some info that said a single 8 GB stick of memory performed just as good as 2x4; whether that was for gaming or not... i don't remember.

In terms of the memory you will "add later" I think this can be risky. It is generally advised not to mix two different models/makes of DRAM as you can run into compatibility issues. So when you want to upgrade I'd recommend buying a new kit of RAM. At the moment 8GB is enough for high end gaming.
I'd go for the kingston hyper x fury 1866 as it's cheaper and will perform very marginally better than the corsair since it has the higher clock speed (it won't make a big difference in performance). Generally gaming performance comes down to your CPU and video card

I have decided to go with hyperx fury cl10 1x8gb 1866 mhz for now as its cheaper and faster than the corsair.
If I add another 8gb stick of the same model with same specs in a short while will they work together in dual channel?
If not, will I be able to get them to work in dual channel by tweaking the settings setting aside stability issues. How do I know if it is running dual channel?
Also the hyperx has a pnp feature. What does this mean? Will it support xmp?
