I have a deal on a stick of 8gb ram that's compatible with my laptop and was wondering if adding this much might be too much for my laptop or will it work fine?

Solution
If you are getting new RAM you should buy two of the EXACT same sticks to put in. When you mix RAM it is usually a 50/50 toss up as to whether or not it is going to work.

From this thread it does look like your laptop can go as high as 16GB: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19479523

So if you can get 2 of those new 8GB RAM modules at a good price right now, I'd say get 2 and max out your RAM. If not, you can certainly try it and if it doesn't work send it back.
