Hey guys, I´m buying my new pc next week and a question came to my mind.
Will I notice the difference in performance between the 1241v3 @3,5ghz and the i7 4790k @4,0ghz in 3d rendering?
The thing is, if I buy the i7 the pc would have 8gb ram, if I buy the 1241v3 the pc would have 16gb ram because of the budget.

Solution
The OP is in Europe, so I have no comparisons on pricing there.

i5-6600K $269@newegg. $210 at microcenter if you can walk in:
http://www.microcenter.com/product/451885/core_i5-6600k_35ghz_1151_boxed_processor
8gb ddr4 ram $48
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100007611 600006069 600521523
Z170 motherboard $99
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157637
That comes out very comparable to my mind.
It does depend on where you shop and what you need.
Who will run a stock cooler on a 4690K? Not many.
I like the cryorig H7 at $35 for each.
What are the rest of your parts?
I can't imagine that something else can't be reworked to buy 16gb of ram.

And...
With Skylake now available, there is absolutely no question in my mind that a new build should be Skylake.
a. Prices for cpu, z170 motherboard and ddr4 ram are almost precisely the same.
b. 6700K has an estimated 5-10% performance improvement per clock over haswell.
c. 14nm runs cooler, you get a decent overclock without the need for exotic cooling.
d. The Z170 chipset permits the use of much faster ssd devices on the horizon. Samsung 950 pro for example:

Admirable
I would put these two on fairly equal footing. Keep in mind the Xeon does not have integrated graphics (a bonus in my mind) versus the i7. If rendering work is a focus though, then going with the Xeon is a good compromise to save some money so you can put it towards more RAM.

The other parts are:
gpu: msi r9 380 4gb
ssd: 256gb samsung 850 evo
ram: 8gb or 16 gb Crucial Ballistix
MoBo: ASrock z97 Extreme3

The i7 6700k is a lot more expensive in Germany as the 4790k (330Eur to 390Eur. And the MoBo is almost two times more expensive as well)

I´m not planning on OC, but I´m very interessted in the 4,0ghz against the 3,6ghz of the 4790 or the 3,5ghz of the 1241v3.

@Geekwad The 1241v3 not having a iGPU is also a plus for me, as I´m not using it at all and it only makes cpus more expensive.

Tnx for the answers guys

Whoops, forgot the cooler, add 35 usd, still 60 usd cheaper.

Skylake is cheaper? Not even close, unless you absolutely need/want the new chipset features, skylake is not worth the extra money.

Also, skylake has no cheap xeons.

@OP
I suggest the 1231 v3 as its slightly cheaper and performs almost identically.

At stock, without overclocking, the 4790 is @3.6.
The 4790K at stock is 4.0 Turbo of either will be higher.

The difference represents about a 10% improvement in compute power.
If the 4790K is10% more, then you get equal value.

And... if you will not be overclocking, you can use a less expensive H97 motherboard.
Here are the differences between H97 and Z97.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1150
Past that, M-ATX sized motherboards are even less expensive and can fit into some nice smaller cases.

ON ram, more trumps speed. Buy the cheapest 2 stick kit you can find. It will likely be 1600 speed.
