Looking for advice/opinions on a drive partitioning plan.

I'm new to partitioning/dual booting and I'd like some input on something I'd like to try. To start off here is what I am working with:

- Dell Inspiron 17r 7720
- Windows 10 (used free upgrade from windows 8.1)
- Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB SSD [strike][/strike] (I have not installed this. This is what I plan to buy)

Currently I am running Windows 10 on the 1TB HDD that came with the laptop. I'd like to add a little more space and I'd also like to dual boot ubuntu 14.04.

The plan:

1) Use Windows Media Creation Tool (and image burning software) to create a windows 10 boot disc and then create a ubuntu boot disc with the iso from their website.

2) Format my current 1TB hdd (after backing it up to an external ssd I have just in case) and insert the ssd linked to above into my laptops 2nd drive bay.

3) Partition the ssd down the middle, install ubuntu on one half, and install windows 10 on the other (I've been led to believe that I won't need a product key or anything like it to reinstall windows 10 but can anyone confirm that this is the case even on a new drive?)

4) Use formatted 1Tb hdd as storage. (I'm assuming I'll be able to access the files on it from both unbuntu and windows without having to partition it. Is that correct?)

5) Live happily ever after.

Anyone see any issues with this plan or have any suggestions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Make a "step 0 - Create current backups and make multiple copies of your factory restore disks" and it looks good. Once you mess witht he partition schemes the factory restore partition usually stops working correctly.

I would suggest fully removing the hdd and inserting the ssd into bay 1 and see if you can install w10 at all. I'm assuming this is the DELL OEM windows and it might not let you so its better to check first IMO.
