Hi,

I have a WD 1 TB My Book. Unfortunately, the power supply started to fail and there was no power. Then, I removed the hard disk from the enclosure and installed in my PC. It does not show up on "My Computer" but on disk management, but it is unallocated. There are files that are very important in it and do not want to format it.

How do I recover the data?

Thanks

Unfortunately, Nexustune, I think the best thing to do is to turn to a professional data recovery company if you need the data off the external WD My Book drive. :( You can check some of WD's Data Recovery partners worldwide here: http://support.wdc.com/Warranty/dataRecovery.aspx?lang=en
If it's the PCB, then the damage is physical, I'm not sure you'd be able to get access to your data outside of the WD My Book original enclosure since this model incorporates a hardware encryption.
I'd strongly recommend you to keep backups in the future and keep your most precious data on at least two different locations.

Best of luck! Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Hey there, Nexustune!

I'm sorry to hear about your failed WD My Book adapter! :( However, you shouldn't have taken the HDD out of the enclosure as it voids the warranty on the product and it also makes the data inaccessible. This is due to the hardware encryption that the WD My Book external drive incorporates. I'd recommend you to put the HDD back in the enclosure or use an identical enclosure in order to be able to access your files.
If you need a replacement adapter, you can check this article from our website that lists all the compatible power adapters for WD Products: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=lx5QRK

Hope it helps. Keep me posted if you have more questions!

Hi,

Its not the power adapter that is dead but rather the controller(green pcb) also warranty is over. Is there any way to access the hard drive?

Me thinks one would be better off not getting an external drive if the data is encrypted. If you do you need to back up again. Just get a HDD (or several) and a simple docking station. Can get a faster HDD too as most external drives are slow drives. I just replace a BlackX Duet docking station that lasted around 7 years. Still have the several HDDs that also work internally thru a sata cable too.
