Hi Everyone!

So a friend is selling her spare laptop CPU i7 4702MQ and I am considering buying it and trying it on my lenovo y500 (Which currently has an i5 3230M) which is bottlenecked in many games by the CPU.

However I'm not sure if it would be an upgrade, or even if I would be able to install it.

Could you please give me some pointers?

What should I check before trying it? How would I know if my laptop is compatible with that CPU? Do you recommend making the change?

Are there any basic tutorials that explain the process of changing cpus to a laptop and their characteristics?

Thanks in advance!

Solution
The i7-4702MQ is definitely more powerful than the i5-3230M because it is a quad core CPU.

However, those CPU have different socket types so you cannot install the i7 in your laptop.

Thanks a lot for your help!

How do you know?

Is MQ the type of socket?

Do you know any places where I can learn more about hardware? (Besides this magnificent site of course)
