The other day I got an idea to construct a light but strong case from some sort of light but sturdy ply-wood or other material. It would have to be cheap so I was thinking to scrounge some left overs perhaps from a builder's sight or scrap yard as there are a few nearby that might be willing to part with their scraps of wood and materials etc for a small fee maybe.

The concept: A second outer case to wrap up my desktop gaming PC, monitor, and wires. Maybe even a nice tray for my mouse and keyboard. The case will have a handle and optional support for wheels in case I want to move it around safely without pulling my arm off!

I was thinking to make a nice box or framework from some sort of plywood that my Gaming PC would sit in. My case is a Fractal Design Core 2300 so it is quite big to fit my GTX 970 graphics card! I don't know my screen res but I know it is in the 700p's somewhere. It's not a 1080p monitor and I think it is either 22'' or 23''.

The case will be on its side so that the flat of the monitor will go against the length of the case. There will be holes for the buttons and a large hole for the back for the air flow etc. There will be a nice long box with a lid so all my cables can fit inside it snugly and the monitor will be firmly attached to this box and the top of the case with some sort of clips or maybe hinges.

The case will have hinges on the bottom with cart wheels attached so that it can sit flat on a desk or table and not roll about but still be able to roll on the ground if I want it to. There will be a hole in the wire box so that I can safely plug it into the wall so that only 1 plug socket is needed.

I want my PC to be moveable so I can take it to the common room and be sociable with my friends when need be or move it to the living room during holidays. It would also be easier to transport it on the buss. But would this case be clunky and heavy and impossible to make? Or do any engineers and crafters out there think this is a viable possibility?

I don't really have a budget at the minute because I am happy with my PC as it is and I have payed all my needed bills for now. It would be a nice half-term project to work on I was thinking or during Christmas maybe in between term time.

What do you guys think? Is this idea absolutely absurd? Or is it a possibility? Is there anything about computers that I need to know?

My specs:

i5 4690k CPU
GTX 9704gb Graphics Card
8gb ddr3 RAM (2x4 sticks)
LGA 1150 H18M-E mobo
Fractal Design Core 2300 Case
500 watt Bronze+Certified EVGA PSU

A BenQ 700p monitor
Wired Keyboard/Wireless Mouse

Solution
What about a mobile base that the entire top latches down onto like a cake cover. That way you un-latch the top and you have normal airflow. Drop the cover on, latch it down and you are ready for transport.

That does sound interesting and a lot easier! So basically I have a platform on the bottom and an entire box-like case on top that latches onto the bottom. Then I simply unhook it and viola I can play sort of mobile-like? That might be a lot easier and I will strongly consider that. It would be a lot easier to make too. In fact, methinks I will do that. I will construct it so that everything is attached to the platform except for the case which I can then put on and take off when not in use. Much easier and stress free methinks.

Thank you very much for your idea! I will let you know how it goes and post screen shots when I made it.

Commercial cases that I have had built use this type latch

You hook the latch and twist the butterfly to draw it tight.
