I have to reinstall Windows XP SP3 Home Edition on a guest computer that is running choppy and acting weird. The PC is just an old Dell Dimension desktop workhorse with an upgraded memory, graphics card, and power supply, but it's just one we use for occassional guests or a backup PC when we need to burn cd rom discs or ISO discs, etc.

SFC/SCANNOW is encountering serious issues from the start, and I cannot locate the disc that reinstalls and repairs the OS. I reinstalled a clean OS a few years ago, back when Windows XP was still Microsoft supported. I remember it was a huge hassle because the XP factory disc only had XP Home Edition SP1 on it and my system had been updated to SP3...but I got it done somehow.

Now I'm just concerned about the issues I may have repairing or reinstalling the OS to its current edition since XP is obselete.

Is there any way I can buy or create a repair/reinstall disc with a complete version of Windows XP Home Edition SP3 that will be compatible for my intent on a Dell Dimension?

Do I need to go with a Dell Factory disc since the OS came pre-installed, or will the OEM disc with the necessary updates also work fine?

Thanks in advance to anyone who may have some information.

Thank You! MK

Hi

If your old Dell came with Dell win xp then any Dell XP recovery disk will work
I dont think Dell have them in stock anymore but you can probably buy one cheaply

You then need to get the service packs
Sp3 requires sp 1 or sp 2. Pre installed

Before embarking on this procedue run memtest86 to test ram
Then test hdd
Hirens boot cd has memtest86 & collection of hdd diagnostics

Even if it passes hardware tests a xp pc is at a greater risk of being hacked or infected .
What about linux with open office or similar instead of ms office
Or buy win 7 home
Or if you cant afford win 7 and dont want Linux then once xp is fully installed and updated then create a image to a usb hard drive or spare internal hdd so if it gets infected re...

If you have the OS installation disc, you can just put them into the PC and boot from the disc.

Then it should automatically enter the Windows XP install wizard, if done correctly. Make sure to backup all files before you reinstall though!
