im new to pc, and the one ive got is really slow, i know i need to upgrade ram to at least 4gb, but what else needs upgrading?

windows 7 64bit

AMD athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 4000+ ~2.1GHz

2gb RAM

DirectX 11

What is the usage of this pc? Just web-browsing?

If all you are doing, is web-browsing and various daily tasks, an SSD is good enough upgrade along with the RAM.

Well, all its good for at the minute is web browsing.
i was hoping to maybe play a few games from steam, not on ultra settings or even high, just something that could run things like portal or team fortress, how much is the cpu needed? or would i need a graphics card?

The Athlon X2 is simply too weak. And of course you also need gpu. But almost all good enough low-end gpus will be bottlenecked by that cpu. Meaning you can't get the full performance out of them.

just looked in dxdiag again and found the graphics card in my computer:
nvidia geforce 7300 le

for the cpu would the pentium g3258 be a big enough improvement to start upgrading the graphics card and other things?

G3258 is enough for some basic gaming. Namely for the Portal and TF2 and similar oldish games made before 2012 or so. + you can later upgrade it to i5 if needed since they use same socket.

G3258 + GTX 750 would be good enough upgrade for playing some old games.
And if you buy Intel H97 chipset motherboard, you can easily later upgrade to i5 4690 for HUGE performance increase.
And any higher performance gpu. So it leaves you some future upgradability.
