Recent extended network connectivity issue

A while ago my moved back into my parents. Their wireless network was too weak to reach the basement where my room is, so I used the router from my apartment to extended the network into the basement by connecting the two routers via ethernet cable. Eventually I figured it out how to extend the network this way and began enjoying my new wireless connection in the basement.
But ever since I got it to work, every few days, my router can't identify the main network and I lose internet. I can usually fix this by restarting the modem, the main router and then my router but today that is not working and I've had enough of doing this! Can anyone please give me some ideas to try or direct me to a thread that could help? I don't know what information would be useful to help solve this, so please let me know what you need to know and I will gladly post it. Thanks in advance!

The main router is an Asus RT-N16 and the one I have connected to that is a NetGear WRN2000v3

You're usually better off using the second router connected to the main router via Ethernet than you are by using it as a wireless repeater. If it's at all possible to run a cable, I'd advise doing that first and letting your router act as a router (effectively routing an already private address). Another choice would be a powerline adapter. You could also just basically deal with it, or try reversing the routers roles. If the main router tends to drop out a lot, then this will cause the behavior you see. You should already be aware if your router drops out a lot or not.
