How do you get data safely off a virus infected hard drive?

So I was asked to recover files from a hard drive, no big. But then they told me they only need it recovered because a virus's destroyed the computer. I checked it and it got locked in BIOS and bricked.

So from the title, is there any safe way I can take the files off of that hard drive without infecting my computer?

I have the password but I haven't gotten ahold of it yet, normally I just plug the drives into my computer and it has no problem reading them, I just don't want whatever virus they had.

Can't say I've ever had a drive lock on me so not sure if this would work but my usual method is to boot from a live usb (or cd) with something like ubuntu then move the files to an external drive and scan the drive on a separate computer just do a scan from inside ubuntu on the infected machine if you don't want to transfer files around.
