my friend have his computer, and he wants 16 gb of ram instead of 8. and he has two memory slots left. so is it possible to buy another one of his ram block sets and run quad channel via two dual channels or does that not work?

Solution
Modules are not "dual channel" or "single channel" or "quad channel". They are simply memory modules. "Channel" operation is controlled by the motherboard and chipset. It's highly recommended that if your motherboard supports quad channel operation, you buy a quad channel kit. However, any four identical or extremely similar modules stands at least a chance of being able to operate in quad channel operation. On the other hand, four modules, whether all four are different or you have two pairs of matched modules (Meaning two modules came in one set and two modules came together matched in a separate set), or even four identical modules all with the same part number that did NOT come together in a set, stand just as good of a chance of...

If the two new modules play together with the two old modules, at all, then they may work in quad channel, they may not. I'd highly recommend four matched modules that come in one set. You can also run four modules, all in dual channel operation, but the same potential for not playing nice together exists.
