Hey guys,
So i currently have a HP 3090 MT PC, it was brand assembled, but later i put an R7 240 and some extra memory in it for gaming,i am not a huge gamer i just play Dota 2 and CS GO.
So my current specs are
Procecssor - Core 2 Duo @ 2.93GHz
Memory - 3GB (1x2GB kingston and 1x1GB Elpida )
Graphics Card - R7 240
Storage - 3 X 320GB HDD

Recently i decided to upgrade my Processor and Motherboard to AMD FX 6300 and MSI 970 Gaming Motherboard
After checking the memory specifications in Perfromance Test app i found that its speed was 666Mhz. So i was wondering if my existing RAM would work with the new Mobo or would it result in degraded performance?

Solution

The i3 has two cores but with multithreading, it acts like 4 threads.
It is an excellent option.
FWIW, the FX-6300 architecture has 3 full cores, but shares resources giving 6 threads.

Have you bought already, or are you trying to find...
Your games are single threaded and cpu limited.
Your Core 2 Duo @ 2.93GHz has a passmark total rating of 1207 and a single thread rating of 1207.
The FX-6300 you propose has is 6343 and 1408. An impressive boost for total, but only 15% better in single thread performance.

One option would be to buy a E8600 2424/1364.
That would be an inexpensive upgrade if you wanted to go cheap.

I think a better solution would be to use a $70 G3258 and a inexpensive lga1150 motherboard.
The G3258 rating is 4000/2171 stock. With the stock cooler, you can overclock some 25% more.
Your current ram should be ok. Intel performance is insensitive to ram speeds.
The faster single core speeds will trump more cores in most games.
Here is one set of tests:

Seems like i should have took more consultation from the forum rather than just reading the comments on Amazon :D

That is sad!

And i did read that FX 6300 has 6 weak cores and while the i3 4160 has 2 strong cores(which was an option for me to buy)
but then only 2 cores was less for multitasking and if i considered playing games like crysis (which i love a lot) or the upcoming games which are supposed to take more advantage of the multiple cores...i went with an FX 6300.

Have you bought already, or are you trying to find ram for a purchased fx-6300?
If looking for ram,
You want documented ram compatibility. If you should ever have a problem, you want supported ram.
Otherwise, you risk a finger pointing battle between the ram and motherboard support sites, claiming "not my problem".
One place to check is your motherboards web site.
Look for the ram QVL list. It lists all of the ram kits that have been tested with that particular motherboard.
Sometimes the QVL list is not updated after the motherboard is released.
For more current info, go to a ram vendor's web site and access their ram selection configurator.
Enter your motherboard, and you will get a list of compatible ram kits.
AMD motherboards are more sensitive to ram compatibility and speed than intel.
