low fps in most games with low GPU usage and bad 3D mark results compared with others with similar systems

i have recently upgraded to a 4k monitor and have been trying out some games, none of which reach above 40fps even though my GPU usage is less than 50% on each card. i have tried MGS V, shadow of mordor, GTA V and far cry 3 and all of them have this problem.
I then did a benchmark in 3D mark 11 and got a score of 10332 : http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/10420619
but it seems like i should be getting about double that based on other tests (not by me) : http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/9538065
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/9124862
http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/8870620

Is there any reason why my score would be so bad compared to these?

specs:
Asus Z-87A
i5 4670k
GTX 980 x2
16GB 1600mhz RAM
RM750 PSU

In that test, it looks like vsync is on. It's capping at 59.9. Test it again with vsync off and post the results. If it's still low in games, you may need to take some screenshots of gpuz sensors and hw info CPU sensors.

thanks for the reply, didnt even think about vsync being on lol.
i couldnt see an option to turn it off in 3D mark so i just did it in nvidea control panel
i re-ran the test and got this somehow : http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/10420832
but after a system restart ended up with this : http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/10420872

its still a little lower than most people with similar setups though and i still dont know whats going on with my performance in games. i tried turning off sli and get the same performance in MGS V except its using 99% of the gpu power but as soon as i enable sli both cards sit at 40% and i still get the same fps.

No problem, that's still off though, as if it's only using one card or both very low. Double check your pcie speeds...should be pci gen3.0 8x8...maybe it's not configured right though, if it was running 16 and 4 or something crazy like 8x4 or pcie 2.0 8x8 which would be like running 3.0 at 4x4.

Double check that and then use gpuz sensor tab and hw info sensor tab and play a game for ten minutes, let the sensors run in the background and then post screenshots of that, showing gpuz for gpu usage, temps, speeds and hw info for CPU usage, temps, speeds and I'll take a look and see if I can spot anything.

thanks again, i did some more testing in some games and turning vsync off in nvidia control panel seems to have fixed it im now getting solid 60 fps with 70% usage in MGS V.

i do have some questions though, my monitor is gsync so obviously vsync should have been off anyway but i had it off in the game, was nvidia control panel just overriding that option?

also when vsync was on in nvidia control panel i was being limited to about 43fps, thats what i was getting in most games, why would it be limiting the framerate to that?

lastly im getting screen tearing now in MGS V but i thought g sync was supposed to eliminate that.

thanks for all the help this has been bugging me for ages

You're welcome, glad it translated over to games, that is weird it was capping you at 43 fps....do you have 60hz g sync or 144hz gsync? Since you said 4K, I'm assuming maybe one of the new 4k g sync which would be 60hz.

Most of the time V sync will override games if you have it turned on, not always though but for the most part it overrides.

Is there an option to turn on G sync in the nvidia control panel, I think there's a couple spots in control panel?

What is your fps in mgsV, above 60 I'm sure with sli?

yeah its 60hz and g sync is turned on for full screen mode in control panel (MGS is definitely in full screen not windows borderless). im getting 59.9 fps according to the msi afterburner on screen display which should be right since g sync limits your max fps to the refresh rate of the monitor but im still getting screen tearing

If it's 60hz and you're above the refresh rate, G sync wont help you, it only will help below the refresh rate...what you want to do for best results, is if you have msi afterburner, it comes with a program riva tuner server that allows you to cap the frame rate and you want to cap it a few fps below your refresh rate, so say maybe 57.

There's been talk when it first came out that if it's hitting close to your refresh rate, say right at 60 fps, you can get input lag similar to what v sync does, so capping it helps instead. I'm not sure if it's been totally fixed yet though.

Try capping it at say 56-57 fps and see if that helps.

You have afterburner and riva tuner comes with it if you installed it at the same time and you can cap it globally through there. There's a standalone copy if you don't have it but if you do it should show up in your task bar that you can open up to show running programs, mine turns on with afterburner.

It will be on the main page, framerate limit.
