Took out hdd from external hdd now I can't access the files.

External HDD drives often have an encryption service in their hardware.
You'll need to put your drive back into the enclosure and transfer the data off. Once the data is off the drive you can pull it from the enclosure and re-format it.

What is the model of the drive? I would assume that it features hardware encryption as well.
In case you can put the drive back into the enclosure(let's say a port or something else is broken), you will need to contact a data recovery company in order to retrieve the data.
