Newly built computer. Plug in Ethernet cable. Comp doesn't seem to realize it's plugged in(no lights or anything on the plug)

I just built a new computer, using a msi z97 gaming 3 intel board. The ethernet cable works and so does the router, yet my pc won't recognize the cable. I go into network adapters, and it says the ethernet drivers are out of date, but when i try to update, it can't find any updates. I've tried so many things, please help! I'm also not the most tech savy of people, please help :C
