Intel AC 7260HMW Locking My Computer Up

Just bought this AC 7260 Dell Wifi/Blue Tooth Adapter.

Every time I try to install the Intel ProSET drivers, it hard locks my computer, loud buzzing noise, you know, the kind that comes from Critical Driver failure.

Without the drivers, the speeds and connectivity are terrible. Like 6mb down and 1mb up, my wired internet connection is 70 down and 6 up and I've had a buddy bring his badass laptop in and test the wifi and he was able to get similar speeds via Wifi, so I don't think it's the router.


Current set up is

CPU: i7 4790k
Mobo: ASRock z97 Extreme 6
Windows 8.1 Pro


Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Just for info, if a ssd would be installed in the m.2_2 slot: Be sure not to use the sata3_4, sata3_5 and sata express for any other devices like hdd, ssd, optical drives...

Back to topic:
Update bios of motherboard to version 2.50
Don't flash in Windows!
Use instant flash tool inside bios

Where did you install the card?
M.2_1 or M.2_2?
M.2_2 doesn't support Wi-Fi add in cards.

The up to date Intel pro set for win 8.1 is version 18.20.0. Did you try this version?

There is actually a Mini PCIE slot like the kind you find in laptops on the board, so I am using that.

updating the bios is a good idea.

Thanks very much for the response. I will go and update the bios now.

p.s. yes I was using the latest version. I used the intel driver update utility and it was trying to install that version when it froze up. (twice in a row)

p.s.s.

also no m.2 installed yet. sata 1 and 2 are in use, sata 3 and 4 have sata cables plugged in but they are for hot swappable IO panel sata bays which are currently empty.

I called the guy who sold me the adapter and we got the drivers updated (abliet, not to the most recent) but he thinks because of how slow my speeds actually are that it might be an antenna problem. So I've gotta locate some Antennas that are worth a damn.
