What i mean by the title is i have a corsair gtx 110i which has a 240mm radiator and dual fans, i have a EVGA 750G supernova psu. i only list those because ive read around and wanted to see others thoughts on me running 4.2ghz as a year round clock setting. ive read of people achieving much higher clocks with the 8120 but i want something stable and safe regardless of load. i can post pictures if necessary. much thanks in advance!

4.2GHz is a pretty mild OC for the FX 8000 series. With that cooler you could hit the FX 9590 clock speeds, 5GHz, easily. 4.2GHz will be fine. The PSU should be fine so long as you don't plan to add a second GPU then you might have to upgrade to a new PSU since the FX series is power hungry, especially when overclocked.

4.2 sounds fine to me. You won't know til you change the settings and run a stability/stress test. THIS will tell you how "safe" your OC is. It's crazy to me that although people have the same CPU, their OC capabiltiies differ. Too may variables come into play to guarantee safety of an OC on any unit. Based on the cooler you have, I don't see you having any issues with that.

Then maybe you could give me some insight, I've read similar things about my mobo about easily reaching 5ghz but I'm have high temps running 4 right now, my mobo is an asus m5a97 r2.0 and I do have a gtx 980 that needs alot of power as well which I should mention

A 980 is not that bad on power. What do you consider high temps?

the picture i posted is running 4.2ghz on 1.3 volts which is slightly above stock. the temperature im worried about is socket temp which is temp1 one cpu-z. this was only 5 minutes after starting the test, i didnt want to let it run its course like that, still havent tried any games like sc2 to demand the processor.

57c is well within the spec for AMD CPUs. SpeedFan is a bit outdated, I would try Core Temp for a bit better accuracy.

Remember as well you are alos running Prime95 which is a 100% stress test. Even Star Craft 2 wont stress the CPU as much as Prime95 will. So you are pretty safe.

What do you have your H100i set to? Quiet, normal or performance?

Performance, I'm just worried about the mobo I couldn't really find any temperature reference for mobo socket temp
