Intel CPU suggestions for a gaming PC?

I'm thinking of replacing my AMD build with Intel, and trying to figure out what cpu to get.

I’m looking at the i5-4460 3.2ghz, and from what I can tell this would be slightly better in comparison to the fx6300 which is what I have now. But how would it compare against a higher end cpu such as the i7-4790? They're both quad core and the speed difference isn’t all that much but I’m planning on using this to play games like Fallout 4 so how much would it matter? Is it worth it to spend the extra $ on something better? Here are the Fallout 4 specs for comparison http://www.gamespot.com/articles/fallout-4-pc-minimum-and-recommended-pc-specs-conf/1100-6431267/

I’m also concerned whether my build would be “upgradeable” enough, I already made a similar mistake in my first build where my current motherboard doesn’t support the cpu I wanted to upgrade to. Maybe instead a DDR4 build would be better for future upgrades using something like the i5-6500 3.2GHz ? Only problem is I'd have to get new RAM.

the 4460 would definately be better than AMD, if thinking up upgrading down the road, look to pair it with an OCable Z97 mobo so you could pick up a K model CPU in the future - If it's in the budget go to the 6500 and a Z170 with the DDR4 then can upgrade CPU down the road with it also ;)
Most games will actually run better on the i5 than the i7. Games do not take advantage of i7 technologies such as hyperthreading. The performance difference in gaming with an i7 will be un noticeable - if at all. Why Bethesda listed an i7 as a recommended requirement is beyond me.

Unless you plan on doing some serious video editing or heavy autocad rendering, the i7 is a waste of cash. There isn't really any telling if future generation intel chips will fit your build; but a new i5 should last you 5 years or so. DDR4 RAM is also starting to fall in price so - good idea to consider.

With this new chip and some DDR4 - you have a nice foundation build that you can use to support the more important component, the graphics card(s). Make sure you give it quality power too.

The i5-4460 is a lot better than the FX-6300, not just a little better. The following benchmarks does not include the i5-4460, but the slightly older i5-3470 makes a good substitute. The FX-6300 is not included either so just look at the FX-6350 benchmarks instead since people would usually overclock it.
