Hate to make one of "those" threads, but just wanted opinions of those more educated than myself. I did search around but couldn't find anything similar to what I am asking.
I'm selling my HD 6970 2GB and will be purchasing a new GPU specifically for Fallout 4 as a main title I will play. I do also use Lightroom/Photoshop for amatuer photography, but I don't think the video card will have too much bearing on the performance of those programs.
I currently game at 1080 although I do hope to purchase a 1440 monitor within the next 12 months. I have a Coolermaster HAF XB case so size of card shouldn't be an issue.
I am leaning towards buying a R9 390 since it seems to benchmark well at 1080 as well as 1440 which will allow me a little room to grow, and with the 8GB of Vram Fallout Mods will hopefully work smoother.
I would like to keep the new card around $350 US dollars.
What do you all think?

THANK YOU!

PC Specs:
i5 4690k @ 4.6
16 GB DDR3 RAM
700W PSU
SSD boot drive
Coolermaster HAF XB EVO

If I were you I would probably get a gtx 970 for now, it will handle 1080p no problem. It will probably get wobbly knees at 1440p though, fps will drop but it will still run. Good luck

depending on the model of your power supply a 390 would be a good choice

I would not run them on lesser units

did you really need it ASAP? if not wait until the game comes out. then we will see some sites will bench the game performance across various gpu. make you decision then. but this is nvidia game. they even mention about the use of volumetric light that rely on tessellation. and when it comes to tessellation we knows how that usually end up with AMD. unless game developer give access to AMD so AMD user can use tessellation override setting in CCC.

I'm in the same boat, amateur photographer also playing games at 1080p. My 7970 is about equal to your 6970. I went shopping for a new card but I'm going to hold off for a while.

Why? For photography a 27" 1440p or 4k monitor is definitely in my future. GTX 970 will barely push that resolution. When I can double my speed at around $350 I'll buy one. I would rather have the new monitor first anyway.

Meanwhile the 7970/6970 should play Fallout 4 pretty well. I just played through Dying Light at almost ultra quality, only had to dial back a few settings. Sure the card is loud and hot I just wear headphones :)

Anyhow if you buy now, I have seen the GTX 970 for around $269 these days and it will only get cheaper as the holidays approach.

My 970 runs 1440p quite nicely, sure your not maxing things out but aside from AA most games are darn near maxed (GTA V, Far Cry 4) Even The Witcher 3 can push pretty high settings @ 1440p. Now 4k that is a totally different story. IMO a 970 should come close to maxing the game at 1440p once its optimized if not to boot.

i would go for R9 390, your PSU is fine, no issue there.
i see more potential for few more years to come with R9 390.
tho both cards are solid. you wont do any mistake choosing one or another :)
