Does my monitor resolution affect the GPU I should buy?

I have the HP 23cw monitor with 1920x1080 resolution. I wanted to buy the Nvidia GTX 960 4GB GPU, but I read somewhere that while 1080p gaming 2GB is sufficient and the extra 2GB will be useless. Is that true? If yes, which GPU should I go for?

I am inclined towards Asus Strix GTX 9000 series. The games I want to play are Wolfenstein New Order & Old Republic, MGSV, and not yet released ones like Fallout 4, Battleborn, Doom 2016, Starcraft LoTV.

I won't do other graphic work. But I want to be future-proof for , say, the next 5 years.

First time building. Other hardware
MB - Asus H97M-E
CPU - Intel Xeon E3 1245 V3
PSU - Seasonic S12G 550W

Thanks!

Yes resolution will, or rather should, dictate which GPU you should buy.

Go ahead and buy the 4GB model anyways. While 2GB is arguably enough, I've seen very new/demanding games hit 2.5-nearly 3GB at 1080P.

So, Strix GTX 960 4GB is a go, right?
