Hi there,

My newly built pc won’t recognize (any) ethernet cable. Specs: i7 4790K, GTX 970, 16 GB Ram and a Gigabyte z97-Gaming 3 motherboard running windows 7 home 64 bit. Now I’ve been searching the web for this problem for quite some time now and I haven’t found a solution yet..

So basically when I use the standard ‘Windows Nework Diagnostics’ it comes up with ‘Plug an Ehternet cable into this computer’. Obviously I do have an ethernet cable plugged in but none of the usual LED’s are lighting up whatstoever, it’s just like it isn’t plugged in. I have tested the cable on another pc and it works just fine. I have also installed drivers that came with the motherboard and made sure to enable LAN in BIOS. Then I figured the port of the motherboard could be the issue, so I got a separate network card, installed in onto the motherboard, plugged the ethernet cable in there and expected the problem to be solved. But nope, same stuff :(

I’m at a bit of a loss now.. Starting to think I’m overlooking something really simple. Or could it be a faulty motherboard all together? Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

first thing i would do is get on a different pc and go to the motherboards manufacturers website and download ALL the latest drivers. make sure to download the bios update as well. put all the drivers on a flash drive, then install the bios update first. after the new bios is installed then install the nic driver. then try the ethernet cable again. i never use the drivers on the disk cause they are most likely outdated. also try resetting the bios back to factory defaults and making sure the nic adapter is enabled in the adapter settings on the os.

Thanks for your reply! I installed all the latest drivers and all but this made no difference unfortunately. Silly question; how do I make sure the NIC adapter is enabled, I can't seem to find the right settings menu.

To check your adapter settings, right click on the computer icon in the taskbar next to you time. when window opens click "Open Network and Sharing Center." the next window you will get will have some selection in the left hand column. Select the "Change Adapter Settings" option which will show you all the adapters you have installed. Right click your "Ethernet" adapter (it may also be named "LAN") and click disable/enable.
