Hey Guys!
I have a really strange story to share, and don't know what have cause it :S
So, today i started up the computer, played some games, then quit the game (Guild Wars 2) and left my computer on. After an hour or so i returned, and wanted to start up GW2, however, it froze. Opened task manager and wanted to close the game but it took minutes to close. Then started again, froze again. My first instict was to check the files, but could not open the folder on my hard drive. Then the whole thing froze, so i started a shutdown, but could not finish, minutes after, it still said shuting down on the screen. Then i hard-reset the computer, but it stoped on windows startup. The strange part is, the windows runs from an SSD, but the games are on an HDD, so i thought maybe i busted the HDD (but then why it could not boot from the SSD?), so i unpluged the HDD from my computer, and it could boot. Then i gave it an other shot, pluged the HDD back in, and this time it ran a chkdsk for the HDD before boot (i believe no problem was found), and then it all booted up. I have all my files, disk utilities finds no error in neither drives, and it works.
Sorry for the long story, but it is really strange, why couldn't the computer boot up because of a potentially bad HDD? And how come this have no sign in any HDD utility/SMART data, also what do you think, which drive might have caused it? Maybe both died the same time?

Hey there, Wicks.

It is quite possible for a faulty drive to cause such issues even if the OS is not located on it. It's good that neither drive showed any errors when you've tested them. It might have been a one time thing. Unfortunately without any negative results from those tests, it's not easy to determine what could've caused that. If you've used a 3rd party diagnostics tool, I'd suggest that you test the drives once again with the manufacturer's diagnostics tools for both the SSD and the HDD respectively. I'd also recommend that you check if all cables are connected properly and if there's any loose connection. Other than that, until this proves to be somewhat of a fluke, I'd recommend that you backup any important data which you might have on both the SSD and the HDD, just to be on the safe side. It wouldn't hurt to run a full scan with your anti-virus program and an anti-malware program (both with updated database) as well, to see if any threats pop-up.

Hope that helps.

So i dug around a bit and in the event viewer found something that might help:

nvstor64 reported Data error on device.
Device: \Device\RaidPort0
Model: Hitachi HDS721050CLA360
Firmware Version: JP2O
Port: 1

thats my HDD there, with data error. When i pluged the HDD back again after a successful boot, it ran a chkdisk, that did come up with an error, and repaired it. Also, found an entry that said a file system corruption that was repaired. That nvstor64 is the thing that handles the drives, right? maybe that ran into a problem?

Could someone tell me about this nvstor64? haven't rly found anything, can it be that the nvstor64 itself got a fluke or is it always a connection issue between the drive and motherboard or windows? i'm 99% sure its not the drive itself.

Basically such errors might occur due to a faulty drive, or cable, or port or drivers (as you've mentioned). You could take a look at this thread here and the offered advices and solutions. It might shed some light on what might be the problem: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/nvstor64-error-causes-frequent-computer-crash/d6117dc9-3fd7-4078-b65a-7cf5f4a8f08e?auth=1.
