Burning smell from case when build was put inside?

Hello PC Community,

So I finally got my case that I waited some time for, and I was super excited to put my build inside of it ASAP. So I thought I did everything right, and it boot up properly the first time, but not quite on the second. My dad even noticed a burning smell coming from the case. So we decided to take the motherboard out again and test it outside of the case. The thing is, as I was screwing in the motherboard to the standoffs, I went a little too tightly and wore off the threads with the screws. With the help of my dad, we managed to take it out with a screwdriver and a flat-head screw driver to push it out as I unscrewed the screw. So after I took out the motherboard and examined the screws, they had the silver of the standoff stuck to the threads of the screw. So by now, we can safely tell that the standoffs are goners. What do I do now? The standoffs aren't a problem because I can get another set, but what about the case? My dad said that he thinks one of the cables from the front panel IO are shorted. We are going to test out which one it is with a multi-meter over the weekend. Until then, any tips?

Thanks,
-ghZZ

Check that you didn't add an extra standoff in one of the spots that don't require one. It could be shorting out the back of the motherboard. Sometimes, not all of the standoffs are needed. It depends on how many holes and where they are located on the board that determines which standoffs are used.

That only applies when the motherboard is touching those standoffs that are not being used right?

At the moment, I am running it outside of the case. Everything is the same except for the fact that it is not in the case. It works fine though.

Yes. If there is a standoff located under the board where there is no mounting hole, it could be grounding out one or more of the solder traces.

What case do you have? Does it have special components? i.e. fan controller?

My Case : Rosewill Redbone U3

And about the standoffs, I am fairly sure I didn't have any extra ones touching the motherboard, but my memory says that there was a screw hole which had a spacer underneath it, but no screw held the motherboard in place with it.

PS : This Saturday, I will be investigating further by testing out if any of the Front Panel IO cables are shorted. If all the cables are good, then there is a fair chance it was that specific standoff OR I screwed up with cabling. I will update around Saturday evening.

Well if you have the motherboard out of the case now, it should be easy enough to look at the board's mounting holes and then at the standoffs in the case and tell if there is one too many. What motherboard?

Motherboard : MSI FM2-A75MA-E35

I already took the standoffs out, but the only extra one I remember there that there was only 1 extra which I accidentally put in, but was in an ATX spot, so my board didn't touch it. I am almost positive that the other standoffs were placed correctly, but there isn't really a way I can check now unfortunately... As I mentioned earlier, I will be doing a test on Saturday, but till then, there isn't much I can do.
