RAM Upgrade Gone Wrong ...

Well, this is annoying.
After purchasing new RAM for a family member's PC I discovered that it didn't get past the initial acer screen once installed, it just did nothing. I anxiously tested the old RAM again just to check that it wasn't an issue with the motherboard or any other component and fortunately it had booted as normal.

I double checked that the RAM I had just purchased was compatible - No problems there.
I decided to use just one RAM card and see if it was a case of an old mobo not being able to handle 8GB - it got past the acer screen but wouldn't boot up Windows.

I've run out of ideas as to what the problem may be.

To clarify, I'm replacing 3GB with 2x4GB of RAM inside a fairly old Acer desktop.
Please, please, please help me out here!
Cheers :)
Sam.

Thanks for the quick response,
I've gone ahead and tried it again after doing what you said but unfortunately it hasn't worked,
however thanks for the suggestion.
I do find it odd that with one RAM card it gets past the Acer screen however with both of them it doesn't how peculiar. :spamafote:

Thanks again, :)
Sam.

Download Memtest86, and burn it to a CD. Then change the boot order in the BIOS to boot from the DVD/CD drive. Then run the tests, that will tell you if your memory is bad (happens sometimes). If you don't have a DVD/CD drive, I believe you can burn Memtest to a USB flash drive and boot from that device, but I have not tried that method.

I've had a go at it but I'm afraid I can't get the PC to boot anything when it has the new RAM inside.
Thank you for the suggestion, :)

I've gone into the BIOS options and disabled quick boot, now the PC gives me a description of what is happening on startup.
Some weird things have been going on, it says (when 8GB is installed) that it can only detect 3GB - however, if I press the delete key when it's doing this it will suddenly jump to 8GB and carry on with the boot until the very last part where it decides to stop!

I'm so confused by this rn. Please for the love of God can someone explain ...

Open to ANY suggestions, :)
Sam.

You said that with one stick of ram, it does get past the acer screen, so you should be able to run memtest, because it doesn't require booting to an operating system. It must have a "mini-operating system" within the program to be able to run the test and see the results on your monitor.

I honestly don't know why but for some reason it now fails to boot anything with one RAM stick.
Cheers, :)

I've updated the BIOS however nothing has changed at all.
I'm certainly considering giving up on the job however I've invested a fair amount of money so I'd be more than willing to try any other option.
Cheers for the replies so far :)

I'm afraid I've just tried that and it didn't work either, I'm certain however that the motherboard and the sticks are fully compatible - unless of course it is unable to handle 8GB of RAM.
