From the modem, a splitter splits cat5 to my router then to PC. I want to do this because I want to move my router to a better central location. But leave my modem and PC in a room.
No splitter, the configuration must be: modem > router > pc. You will have to run a longer cable from the router to your PC or use Wi-Fi instead. Cat5 can be up to 100m long (329 feet)

Here is an article that describes what op has in mind, I would probably run 2 separate cat5's for pc and router if your modem has extra port. Otherwise whats rar_54 suggested is the most commonly recommended setup. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/564-42-splitting-cable
