I'm finally looking to get an SSD for my veteran rig with a EP45-DS3L mobo. It has 6 SATA ports on it, but I'm not sure of the port types. I've read that if I get a M.2 SSD I need a M.2 slot on my mobo. I have no idea what that means, so basically I'm asking for help. What do I need to do in order to have an operational SSD in my system? Also, what would be my best choice to go for (thinking 120gb atm).

Solution

From the GB SPECS (LINK) your mobo does not have an M.2 slot.

Storage Interface South Bridge:

6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices

JMicron 368 chip:

1 x IDE connector supporting ATA-133/100/66/33 and up to 2 IDE devices

iTE IT8718 chip:

1 x floppy disk drive connector...

A M.2 slot is a different thing to a SATA port, this is a M.2 http://www.ocinside.de/media/uploads/plextor_m6e_256gb_m2_ssd_1.jpg
Any SATA SSD will work with your motherboard a good one to get is

I would go for a 240GB as you should move your OS onto it to decrease boot time, and same with your games/applications. A 120GB disc gets full pretty quick these days

You DO have 6 SATA II plugs available. If 120 GB is all the storage that you need, pick up a 120 GB Samsung 850 Evo LINK and install it. You should be all set.

Thanks for the quick and much appreciated answers and tips. 120GB will be more than fine for me, I plan to have my OS and 2-3 games I play (mostly MOBAs) on the SSD, dont really need too much space.

You're quite welcome!
