HD 7950 vs GTX 780

My HD 7950 is dying and I found a GTX 780 for $175 and was wondering how much of an improvement it'll be?

I've seen benchmarks showing it to be around r9 290 level when it was first released but I've also seen more recent benchmarks of it just barely beating a r9 280x.

I own both (HIS HD 7950 IceQ and PNY GTX 780 CC). The GTX 780 is a pretty decent step up. I can use higher quality settings and still get better FPS. Its probably 30-50% faster depending on the game. As far as other cards go the GTX 780 sits squarely in the middle between the R9 28X and the R9 290. Here's a recent review of a GTX 950 that also has the R9 280X, GTX 780 and R9 290 listed in the performance summary to show that.
