I'm not a computer guru and was definitely conned by the fast-sounding 4GB graphics card when I purchased the Dell XPS 8700 desktop last Christmas for my husband. A tech who came to work on another computer in the house took a quick look at the card on the XPS 8700, and said it wasn't a very good card - other forums have backed that up, as well. The screen freezes in mid-flight or my husband gets the Blue Screen of Death when he runs Microsoft Flight Simulator X. I was hoping he'd finally be able to crank the graphics up on the program with the new computer, but this seems to run worse than his old computer 7 years ago. Does anyone know what type of card I should upgrade to get the best performance (under $200) on this computer? Known specs are below:
XPS 8700
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 745 4GB DDR3
4th Generation Intel Core i7-4790 processor (8M Cache, up to 4.0 GHz)
16GB Dual Channel DDR3 1600MHz (4GBx4)
1TB 7200 rpm Hard Drive
Windows 8.1 (64 bit)
The PSU is factory, but I'm not sure how many watts it can handle
Thank you.
