[SOLVED] I7-4790k vs Xeon E3-1246 v3 at only $20 difference

So I've been researching this topic and I am still debating between the two processors. The biggest difference in my situation is that I can get the Xeon for $240 and the I7 for about $260. I have a z87 motherboard that is already compatible with Devil's Canyon so thats a non-issue.

i7-4790K. yes. definitely.

It's 4.4GHz compared to the Xeon's 3.9GHz Turbo (almost 13%). so that's the performance difference. Otherwise for your purposes they are almost exactly the same.

(Also the XEON is hyperthreaded too)

I would go with the i7. For a $20 difference you retain the hyperthreading and get 500mhz faster speed across all 4 cores on turbo even if you don't overclock it. It's a much better cpu in my opinion. Not to mention with the z87 and a decent after market cooler you can overclock it a bit faster if you enjoy overclocking.
