I am looking for a new GPU for my work and gaming. I'm a 3d artist and work with softwares such as Maya, Zbrush and Photoshop mainly along with 3ds Max and blender and few other softwares. I also game occasionally. I really can't find a clear answer as to which GPU to get. I know the Quadro and the FirePro series are the best for 3d applications but I was looking for a consumer grade gaming GPU. I have a budget ofabout $350 so I have two options. The Nvidia GTX 970 and the AMD R9 390. I really like the fact that the 390 has 8gb of vram which might help in modeling high poly assets. I mainly do modeling and texturing. My models in Zbrush usually go to about 30 million polys and higher. Also I've never used my computer for GPU rendering and wanted to venture into that side as well. I've read threads that said certain softwares prefer Nvidia for CUDA which is what has really confused me. My primary software is Maya for all the 3d stuff I do and zbrush for sculpting/texturing along with photoshop. I will soon start incorporating 3ds max into my pipeline as well. I really hope someone can give me a clear idea on which GPU to go with for my work and occasional gaming.

Here are my current specs :-
Intel core i7 4970 K
ASUS maximus VII Ranger
Corsair Vengeance 8gbx2 @ 2133mhz
Corsair HX 850W Power supply
Cooler master HAF 922 case

Also I would like to know which version of the GPU should I get. I like the gigabyte g1 gaming gtx 970 windforce edition for the 970 series but can't pick a 390 version. I've read the gigabyte g1 gaming is pretty long. Would that fit my case?

Thank you.

A 970 will be sufficient but it depends how big the projects are that you are working with on Photoshop/3D Editing. If you are working with big projects I would recommend making sure that you have 16GB RAM as I've had projects on Photoshop taking up 10GB alone. If you've got the money aside I would defiantly recommend upgrading to a GTX 980, either EVGA or MSI are the brands that I have used for builds in the past but have heard no bad rumors with Gigabyte
And yes it will fit in your case no problem.

Thank you Jason. So will the extra vram on the r9 390 not boost performance while rendering? Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought just like how more ram helps work on larger files, I felt more vram will help render high poly objects quicker while using the GPU as the renderer and not the CPU. Also I've read that the r9 390 will have better support for direct x 12?
