so i really want to play dayz on my pc, will i be alright with the amd 860k and the r9 380. my absolute max budget for a cpu would be £100 (roughly 140 usd i think). i would only really want to run it on medium settings and would be able to play 40 fps! thanks for your help!

The 860k is more than capable for DayZ (admittedly, I had to look up what that was).

http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=4843&game=DayZ&p_make=AMD&p_deriv=Athlon+X4+860K&gc_make=ATI&gc_deriv=Radeon+R9+380&ram=8&checkSubmit=#systemrequirements

8's are really good numbers (in relation to required spec), you'd need a dramatic price increase to get a substantially better CPU to see any real difference in that game.

You'll likely see greater than 40fps on high settings (perhaps even ultra), so your 40fps at medium is absolutely no problem.

Luckily you should be able to pick up the 860k for around 55quid http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-Athlon-Quad-Core-Desktop-Processor/dp/B00MU00IOQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1445618604&sr=8-1&keywords=860k (you don't need the 'black' edition, but if prices are close, pick that one up). Do you have a compatible board? Or do you need that too?

Do you currently play DayZ? I find the Arma engine pretty but bloated.

I recommend you look up 7 Days to Die on Steam. It's in Alpha, but it still feels like more of a complete game and each new release adds in more content. It's amazing how good it looks now compared to the old video on the steam page.

DayZ just does not have much to offer as 7DtD (in my opinion). I run an old Intel E6750 and although the game is in Alpha it runs fine on my Nvidia GTS 250.

Check out the dev blog. http://joelhuenink.tumblr.com/

Go plug your tumblr somewhere else, not in a legitimate thread.

As much as I like the 860k for its sheer bang to Buck factor if dayz is a major priority for you then I'd honestly be looking at an i3 haswell.
As lookitsrain has already stated anything based on the arma engines is majorly single threaded & you'll be looking at fps of 25-35 without heavy overclocking on pretty much any amd CPU.
