I got my pc from pc specialist 2 years ago and decided to recently upgrade so i bought myself from overclockers:

Inno3D GeForce GTX 980Ti X3 Ultra 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (C98T3-1SDN-N5HNX)

and also bought some more RAM of

Kingston HyperX Beast 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX321C11T3K2/8)

I installed them and everything seemed fine the computer picked the new hardware up fine and all the software for the new card worked. However a few days later i was playing Killing floor 2 and my pc restarted mid game. and then a few days later again it happened so i thought right better check this out.

so i downloaded CPUID HWMONITOR and SPEEDFAN and found that my CPU was overheating. With the CPU i have i found online saying it could run up to 95 degrees however im hitting on both hwmonitor and speedfan between 115-120 degrees since installing my new hardware.

i went into the bios set all fans to turbo even downloaded EVGA to check the GPU and put the fans to 100% on that and i could see that the CPU temp kept jumping between 60 and 115-120 so it looked like it was trying to cool itself down.

So i went and ordered from overclockers a

Corsair Hydro H60 V2 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060007-WW)

as i thought it just needed some better cooling over the standard intel fan that was on the motherboard. so i just installed it and it comes with thermalpaste already preapplied and after looking online most people said the paste it of a decent enough quality to use. the new corsair fan is running and i can feel a lot more cold air coming out the case. so i started up killing floor 2 and again its saying my CPU is overheating just like before.

The only thing i havent tried yet is putting my old card back in and installing that to see how the CPU performs, but of course ideally i would like to use my brand new better GPU.

does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be here? if you need any other information please ask and ill try to provide as best i can.

HWmonitor is notoriously faulty for misreporting thermal readings on some chipsets. I'd trust the readings from HWinfo and CoreTemp far more than anything you see using HWmonitor or Open Hardware monitor. If the temps shown below in HWinfo are all below 70°C, maybe a bit more or less depending on the motherboard, while under a full load, then you are fine. Especially if core temp is backing up what you're seeing in HWinfo, and HWmonitor is the only kid doing his own thing, so to speak.

Try HWinfo or CoreTemp instead of HWmonitor, and see if it's reporting the same temps. Make sure all case fans are working properly. Try updating your bios. When problems begin on systems that previously were working fine, after the addition of new hardware, it's usually either a bios issue or is related to something not having been reconnected properly.

What is your case fan configuration looking like? How many case fans, where are they located and in what orientation for each fan, intake or exhaust?

Considering the age of your motherboard, it's entirely possible that you're experiencing a motherboard failure. Problems with the VRMs can easily cause CPU or motherboard overheating as can other motherboard issues.

so on both hwinfo and coretemp i can see all the core temps and the highest any of them are going with the game running is 27 degrees, the tj max temp is set to 90 and i cant see any temps on either program running anywhere close to that.

when i do try and go into system information of core temp it freezes my whole pc, all i can do is move the mouse.

Also should mention that on HWmonitor the temp thats hitting 120 is the CPUID on the ASUS motherboard part. but on hwinfo again theres nothing showing under the intel 4930k or ASUS parts of temps hitting anywhere near to that

im going to install my old card again and if it is still overheating with that then at least ill know its not my new GPU thats causing any issues and that will narrow it down to the CPU/motherboard.
