I want to change my motherboard and CPU. I have an OEM windows license and I know i'll have to reactivate, but would the PC still boot with a new motherboard? I'm also confused on the BIOS thing, like if i'm going to have the wrong version and the motherboard wont work?

What exactly do you have to do when upgrading a motherboard?

Well this is not going to be officially supported any longer. but if you use the OEM CD with OS that came with your computer and then the OEM Key on your cert sticker it should activate. if it does not your out of luck if you want to keep it legal. Cant tell you anything else and the way I told you is kind of a grey area so good luck.

Windows probably won't boot. It definitely won't LEGALLY boot.

BIOS version can be an issue if you are buying a CPU that is just released but a motherboard that has been for sale for a while. You could get a motherboard that needs a BIOS update BEFORE it will recognize your CPU.

If you are buying a 170 motherboard and a Skylake CPU then no issue. If you are buying an A88X motherboard and an A10-7870K CPU, you might have a problem.

Do you think it would just be better to keep my old Motherboard and get an i5 3rd gen instead of upgrading mobo and getting 4th gen?

The 3rd gens are just so much more expensive on amazon because they are out of stock everywhere...

Also, if I do get a new Motherboard I will have to completely format my HDD, correct? Then buy a windows copy from somewhere like bestbuy?

It might be the case that you want to buy a used CPU on E-Bay. Depending on your motherboard, you may be limited by power consumption, or BIOS. Many OEM motherboards have a specific list of CPUs they support.
