[SOLVED] Has anyone had their heatsink "unseat" itself?

I've had my computer for 3 years. While I have upgraded various things, the motherboard/cpu has stayed the same. So I've never had to take out or move the heatsink.

But today, I get home, and I notice my monitors not getting any video signal (I leave my computer on all the time). I check the connections, and all seems good, despite no signal and the computer "on". I reboot several times, won't go to POST or anything. It turns on for like 5 seconds, then reboots itself a couple times, then does nothing.

I check the motherboard, and I see the CPU led is on. I was thinking it shit itself or something. I check the heatsink, seems normal, albeit somewhat cooler. But I figure that could be normal, as the computer hasn't been used since I just got home, and I keep the heatsink fan running anyways.

But I decide to just check the CPU and go from there. I take off the heatsink, and notice the thermal paste is somewhat spotty. As in, at the bottom of the HS, coverage of the paste is not "smooth" over the base at all, and there seems to be more paste towards the edges. The CPU itself looks "better" in paste coverage. But I wasn't sure if this was normal and was just caused by me taking off the HS or what. I clean off the CPU/HS and reapply thermal paste and reinstall everything.

I boot up. The first time, it seems like it does some checks, but LEDs on mobo aren't on, so that's a good sign, reboots once, then POST, and then tells me a new CPU is installed. I check BIOS to verify the settings, save, and reboot, and it boots to windows just fine.

So it seems that the heatsink unseated itself maybe, and the CPU overheated and shut off ?

Anyone had that happen before? Is there a way I can check that? Not sure there a way to keep a history of CPU temps, or whatever to see what might have caused it?

I have the Hyper 212 EVO, so it's not THAT big of a HS (I've had the bigger version before on an older computer).
