Having strange problems with my computer and can't figure out a solution.

This all started about a week ago I woke up and saw the VGA light was on on my motherboard and the screen had gone blank, I turned off the computer and went to work. When I came home the computer wouldn't boot the VGA light just kept coming on. Thinking I was having problems with my graphics card I tried moving it down to the second PCIe lane and was able to get the computer to post but it still wouldn't boot. Tore the entire computer down to one stick of ram and tried to boot through CPU's on board graphics and it still only posted. Ended up running the windows repair disk and had to completely reinstall windows 10. After i reinstalled drivers I was able to get everything up and running and was able to game

About a day or so later I go to play some games and get like 15-20 fps on games I always get 60+. Now I am trying to figure out why. Did some googling to see what my problem could be, first I tried the removing the graphics drivers and doing a clean install. Nothing. Searched some more and heard someone mention their graphics card was running at 8x instead of 16x and after a looking I saw my card is running at 4x in the first PCIe slot and at 8X in the second PCIe slot. these are both 16x slots. Checked both in the BIOS and using CPUID. I am running on a clean install of windows 10 with all the latest drivers. I wish i had another graphics card to try on my motherboard to see what is causing the problems...

Did everything you suggested. I was already running default bios and the CPU looked perfectly fine. What are you looking for in the pcie slots?

Only thing is now that I put it back together I only got it to boot once. The vga led keeps coming on. Boots fine with on board graphics though.

Gpu won't actually fit in the 3rd slot, powersuply is in the way. Anything else I can do that doesn't involve another computer or graphics card? Don't actually have access to another computer...

Fractal design define R4. I think the motherboard only supports two way sli so no need to fit a dual slot card in the 3rd lane? Bios version 2601 i just actually updated the bios when I was reinstalling drivers a few days agoago.

I should also add that my computer is booting regularly into Windows now. I didn't change anything. Still getting bad framerates and it is still either running 4x or 8x

All of the pins look fine. I have completely re formatted my C-drive and re installed windows again. Also re-flashed the bios. Still the same thing 4x in the top slot 8x in the second. After doing some reading i realized that the difference between 8x and 16x is around 2% that shouldnt be causing my performance problems when in the second slot should it?

I have ran Heaven benchmark a few times. My system should get around 50-60fps at the extreme settings and I am only getting an average of 20-25. My power % doesn't seem to be going above 60% in MSI Afterburner, also my temperatures aren't going over 55 (used to get to 75+). CPU usage looks normal and is definitely not thermal throttling.

I haven't had any problems booting over the past couple of days just the performance problems.

Screen cap of basically everything GPU-Z shows that i'm running a 16x slot and only getting 8x.

Found a fix or more probably a band-aid for my performance problem. Went into the BIOS and forced the 2nd PCIe slot to run as gen 2 instead of the default AUTO. Performance in games and benchmarks have more then doubled and im using 90-100% power consumption and my temps are back up to 75~ degrees.

Still can't get anything over 4x in the top PCIe slot.

I assume I can rule out the PSU and the GFX card as the cause of my problems? Seeing as I am able to get good performance. Should I try to RMA the motherboard? I would like my computer up and running for NOV 10th and I know i can be without my computer for a while with the RMA process

put your bios back where it was auto on the second pci slot i explain what happening that only 8x value this is a power saving feature in the gpu on the right side of bus interface in gpu-z press the question mark and it will start rendering so you will see it work at 16 x at 3.0 .

That's the thing though. I have been trying that blue question mark. On auto it always reads 8x 3.0 And even the frame rate in the little benchmark is low. Force the card to 2.0 and it reads 8x 2.0 and the frame rate in the benchmark doubles
