Recently installed my first GPU (the 970) and after making sure everything was connected properly, I get a black screen after booting it up.

If you previously used on board video of the motherboard, or had a different model of graphics card in your system before you fitted your Msi GTX 970 graphics card.

Make sure you remove any old graphics card drivers from windows, including any that may of been installed for the graphics solution if the motherboard has on board graphics.

Click on the link bellow, and download this software, and install it.
Run the program to remove all video drivers in windows.

Restart your system.

Get the latest revision of the GTX 970 driver from the Nvidia website and install it.
Make sure you have the latest version of direct X also installed on your system.

Also check that you have from your PSU connected the required 12v Pci-e power connectors to the back or side of the GTX 970 card.
And that you have the extra 12v Eatx eight pin power from your Psu connected to your motherboard.

Hey, I eventually got it to work and I got new drivers installed and everything else, however now I'm running into a problem where my PC just freezes up and i have to do a hard shutdown and when I try to boot my PC up again, it just cuts right off.

This is what I did:
1. I uninstalled the drivers from my onboard graphics using Display Driver Uninstaller ( do this in safe mode)
2. Download the newest drivers for my GPU
3. Disabled the onboard graphics on my motherboard
3. Put my GPU back in and then install the drivers for it

This should be able to help you, but the real problem for me was that my Power Supply wasn't adequate enough to power my GPU.

Do I uninstall the drivers on my gpu as well just to be sure? And your psu was just because of the freezing right? I have 500w and When I uninstall everything do I install the gpu drivers before I put the gpu back in?? Lastly will I be able to get the motherboard graphics back if it doesn't work?

Yes, you uninstall all drivers, onboard and GPU drivers. You put the GPU back in THEN install the drivers. If all else fails, you can get the drivers back for onboard graphics
