hey guys, so i was having trouble on what to order for my new budget gaming pc and decided to ask the community. So originally I was going to by the EVGA gtx 750 ti pair it up alongside the AMD A6-5400K Dual core at 3.6ghz but than one of my buddies told me that i would need to upgrade the cpu to something more powerful to actually play the high end, next gen games on medium to ultra settings. Is this true? I mean the higher end say intel i7 processors still have around the same clock speed but are a ton more expensive.

Processors don't make gpus perform better, they can only make them perform worse. When a cpu's performance restricts the performance of the gpu, that's called bottlenecking. You always want a processor that's balanced with your gpu, or a little better, since gpus tend to be easier to upgrade than your cpu, because when you upgrade your cpu you often have to get a new mobo and sometimes new ram (depends on when you upgrade). The Athlon X4 860k is the cheapest cpu on the market that will not bottleneck a gtx 750ti. Together a combo of an X4 860k and a gtx 750ti will give you similar performance to a console. You...

The clock speed isn't the only thing that determines a processor's processing power. You also have to include the number of cores, if the processor enables hyperthreading, the architecture the cpu is built off of, etc. So your friend is right. Your gpu isn't that powerful so you don't need a great cpu like an i7 to pair with it. If I were you I'd at least get an AMD Athlon X4 860k with a matching motherboard. That cpu would not bottleneck the gtx 750ti. You'd essentailly have slightly better performance than the current generation of consoles (i.e. 1080p 60fps at medium settings in most games).

Yeah console performance would be 40+ fps at high to ultra settings, or 60+ fps at low to medium settings. So you should be getting a minimum of 60fps at medium settings, which looks just great honestly. You'll probably get better performance out of less demanding games as well.
