Wiping whole computer. Need help and advice.

Hi, I have a custom built computer I bought on the cheap, and I would like to completely wipe it and reinstall Windows. Interestingly enough, I don't have a CD-Drive, but I plan on using this guide to help with the process. http://www.wikihow.com/Reinstall-Windows-7-Without-CD

I would just like some other tips on doing this safely and correctly. I want to start this computer out on the right foot completely, so getting the right software and drivers once I reinstall Windows would be great. Does any one have a step by step process they would use? I don't want to miss anything that might create problems down the line, especially with a new graphics card being sent in the mail. I don't want there to be any weird glitches or capability issues.

First, find the motherboard model number and then find it's manufacturer product page. Download every listed driver there for Windows 7. Save them on external media or optical disks for installation after you install Windows.

Then, do a clean install as follows:

If you have a valid product key for windows 7 you can download and create Windows 7 USB installation media here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

Next, install all the drivers you downloaded previously. If you have other hardware, like your graphics card and other components that are not included with the motherboard drivers, go to the product page for those items, download and install their drivers as well. Usually drivers that come on disk with hardware are outdated and don't represent the best of what's available by the time you get them.

Thanks! But also, should I install the drivers, for example, the graphics driver, before I even physically install the devices, if possible? I've had problems with AMD drivers before, and would love to avoid that.

No, that should not be necessary nor is it recommended. The AMD Catalyst driver package requires hardware checking prior to payload delivery, so it wouldn't do any good anyhow. Just install your hardware, install windows, then run the DDU as follows (Even though it's a clean install of windows, run the DDU anyhow prior to installing the driver package):

Then install the correct driver as indicated on the AMD website here for your card model and operating system. Don't run the automatic check, input your information and download manually, then install.

Assuming you have Windows 7 64 bit I'd install all of the following:

Audio: http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Driver/motherboard_driver_audio_realtek_azalia-ati.exe

Ethernet LAN driver: http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Driver/motherboard_driver_lan_realtek_8111_w7.exe

Motherboard VGA driver (Only really necessary if you want to use the integrated graphics on the motherboard): http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Driver/motherboard_driver_amd_vga_8-series.exe

After installing those, I'd run the DDU as outlined above in my earlier post. After completion (And you should click YES when it asks to boot into safe mode during the DDU process) once it boots back into the Windows desktop in regular desktop mode, install the following:

Motherboard chipset drivers: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows+8.1+-+64
(Only install the first listed driver on that page, the chipset driver, not the RAID driver, unless you plan to use a RAID array, which is doubtful.)

GPU card driver (Install version 15.7.1, not the BETA version): http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows%207%20-%2064

If your BIOS version is older than version F6, then I'd update to the latest bios here:

Since I'm starting fresh, could you recommend some basic or handy programs to download as well? Is there an anti-virus you would recommend? Also, what are some healthy tips or steps I can take to keeping my computer as well maintained as possible?

I'd use the built in Windows defender for virus protection, so go to Control Panel> Windows Defender, and enable it then be sure to keep it updated or set it to update automatically.

For Malware protection there can be no other choice really aside from Malwarebytes Premium. You can use the free version, but it's not nearly as good of an option. Bitdefender is a pretty fair option too, and combines both antivirus and malware protection, but again, it's not as good an option as independent virus and malware protections. Still, it works well enough in most cases.

Keeping your system maintened is fairly easy. Just do everything here on a regular basis, maybe once per week or once every two weeks, and you'll be good to go. This tutorial was written for Windows 10, but almost all of it should apply to windows 7 as well.

Okay, I've done the steps as you instructed, and my computer seems to be running perfectly. None of the strangeness from before. I did notice that the DDU set my Windows Update settings to off. Should I turn them back on to the defaults?

It shouldn't turn Windows update off, only automatic driver updating. If it turned windows update off, turn it back on. I prefer to set Windows update on Windows 7 to the "notify me when updates are available" setting rather than automatic, so I can pick and choose what I want to install (Generally critical and important updates) and what I don't want it to install (Drivers and optional updates, except those I do want).
