I want to move the current harddrive from my samsung np305ea to my new hp compaq presario cq56.

My current cq56 harddrive is running windows 10(clean install, free upgrade from 7) and I hate it honestly, the harddrive that I wish to move into it, is running windows 8.1 pro(the samsung np30 one).

The current harddrive in the hp laptop is:
298GB Hitachi HTS725032A9A3 SATA Disk Device (SATA) 35 °C

The current harddrive in the samsung laptop is:
298GB Western Digital WDC WD3200BUCT-63TWB (SATA)

Are these laptops harddrives compatible? and is it a simple case of switching them over?

Ps. I did attatch the harddrive to the new laptop once, and it seem to work ok once it auto configured. However when trying to use an program(vlc player to play video precisely) it seemed to crash. This could be due to poor a poor cpu in the hp laptop, which i am upgrading very soon.

I would be willing to put the harddrive in the new laptop and completely refresh the hdd while in there if it helps.

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately I bought the hp laptop secondhand, and he had upgraded it to windows 10, more than a month previously and so I no longer have the option.

So you are saying it is not possible at all and it is a lost cause? Is the os license not on the bottom of the samsung laptop? What would happen if i were to move the harddrive into the hp laptop after reseting it while in the samsung one?

Thanks

note: if it would work absolutely fine and the only drawback would be not being able to use windows update anymore, that would be perfectly fine.

OEM licenses are non-transferable. In the case of Win8, there isn't even a physical license - it only exists in the BIOS, and checks for it on every boot. It's also probably UEFI, and the HP probably won't even be able to boot UEFI installs.

If you get hold of Win7 media (may need to be HP branded), you could install 7 again.

what would happen if i were to simply factory reset the harddrive in the samsung laptop. Then switch it over to the hp one? I know it runs at the very least (I have switched them and it did some autoconfig thing and worked.)
