I have an i5 3570k and a gigabyte sniper 3 MB. I have 16gb ram DDR 3 1600. I have about 7 harddrives 3 ssd and 4 hdd and 2 dvd roms. I just got myself a gtx980ti. NOW my motherboard is dying it randomly shuts down and wont boot. i plugged in a cd/rom and it shut down would not boot. the sound some times plays up. If the mother board dies what will be the best option to get my computer up and running? The mb is just out of warranty by about 3 months. I was thinking 2nd hand maybe but cant afford a mb that may die shortly after. I cant afford a good gaming mb and cpu i will be lucky to save a $200 to $300 in the next few months as my car needs $1200 worth of repairs so i can get to work. The wife just brought me windows 10.

Congrats. I've seen that problem a few times. Power cable ends all loose and not working. So the hard drive or cd-rom turns on and off at random when you wiggle the connector.

What do you have for a Power Supply? All those hard drives and that massive GPU is why I'm asking. That could be the problem.

I'd look at Asus motherboards. Look for one that has the connections you need and get a cheap one. They are very reliable and would get you another 3-5 years of warranty. Your current CPU and RAM should fit a motherboard available.

Hi

Well every el cheapo no name power supply I sold to customers who just wanted something cheap to get them going would be lucky to last 2 years.

I sold many Antec and Enermax entry level power supplies that always worked very well. No issues booting a motherboard like the cheap power supplies. Some motherboards used to need a better quality power supplies just to boot based on the quality of the voltage. People always thought it was their motherboard that was fried but it was the power supply not being good enough. I'm an Antec fan.

All the better power supplies on the market have no problem lasting 5+ years and even 10+ years. The Antec's have a 5 year warranty.

Also with random shutdown check the temperature of your CPU. Most motherboards will auto shutdown at 75'C to prevent damage. Check your bios after running your computer for a bit and see the CPU temperature. Hopfully it's under 50'C and preferably closer to 30'C.

The power supply being 1000W means nothing. Some 1000W power supplies will die at 800W or even less, while some 500W poower supplies can push 700W. It's about quality of components like capacitors, and the design. You get what you pay for with power supplies and I always tell people it's the most important part of the computer and not to cheap out.

When you say error message do you mean on a little LED display on the board itself, or does it actually boot up and give you an error on the monitor? Also try booting with nothing but CPU, RAM, an onboard video or video card if you have none. Then start adding your hard drives and cd-roms. I've seen a hard drive prevent the board form booting. It must have been a problem with the ATA controller on the hard drive.

Hi all i found the problem it was a power cable to the HDD shorted out. It was running fine for a couple of weeks, then a random shut down. I use to love trouble shooting computers and overclocking. Now im sick of it i just want a working computer.
