WD Caviar Blue 5000AAKX

Video:

https://vid.me/Y6xd

It spins like 80mm fan all the time and its empty now as storage.
Don't know was it always like this, it was in PC I build but not for me (if it was this loud I could have mistaken the noise with some fan maybe.)
It works normally but only that noise is like a bad 80 mm fan at max and its hot like a cpu.
Is there something to do and fix it to be quiet? Or to replace it (its still under warranty)
I tried format and checking for bad sectors/partitions but as I said it works and show like its all fine under Win 10.

Hey there, Frozen82.

Sorry to hear about the issues you're having with your drive. It sounds a bit noisier than it should be. I've just tried one of our WD Blue drives with a docking station, just to compare and it was a lot quieter. I'd recommend that you download DLG (Data Lifeguard Diagnostics) and run both tests (Quick and Extended), to see if anything unusual pops-up. Here's how to do that: How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows. You should also make sure that the drive is mounted properly and all the screws have been tightened.
In case you stumble upon any errors or bad sectors, I'd recommend that you contact our customer support and ask about RMA: WD Support Contact Numbers

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Hey mate, thanks for the reference. Also, you're right with your noise/sound description.

Thanks for reply.
Did both and no errors.
I mean i had a lot of drives most WD and none sounded like this even those way before sata. It sounds like an optic drive writing on a DVD and it never stops. And non of drives i have was ever this hot.

I'm from Europe and bought the drive from local retailer so I doubt costumer support for USA would do any good.

The repair service specified in warranty for the drive is a local service but they don't have WD as specified for things they do repair (on a list).

Warranty is on for 1 more month so as I see it, it comes down to retailer interpretation/good will if the company in a warranty paper doesn't and probably cant repair it, because its working...only not as it should (without heat/noise).

well it can be a motor or bearing in the drive assembly as well and nothing to do with the platters or arm [part that reads the drive ] to me if its that audible as you describe I would conceder a rma with wd . all I use is wd drives and that just don't sound like its right in some way [opinion]

that drive only carries a 2 year warrantee - better get on the ball with them [blacks are 5 ]

I'm sure wd has a EU place that handles warrantees ?

I thought that its maybe something with win 10 update/partition/sata drivers etc. but its clearly hardware.
Or cables for PSU/sata cable but I replaced them try out different motherboard sata connector, still the same.
Before I went outdoor it stopped and I thought it was ok (after I finished that test from above)
Turn the PC on now and again same noise.
I'm in Europe but not European Union so retailer/Monday is only option (looked at that link and my country is on the list but not supported, Serbia )

New update
So again its now stopped after 1h of full noise it suddenly stopped and you cant hear it at all.
Drive is normal and works silent or loud.
I really never had something strange like this lol
Don't know why it is loud when you turn on PC and why it stops after some time.

well just keep in mind you store stuff you want to keep or not loose on it or a lot of reinstalling hunting stuff down to get back and all with this questionable issue hanging over it ??? so you got to risk that or replace it with a drive you got better confidence in ??

now its your call on what to do from here it may last forever - ayera or two- or month -- or the next few time you fire up ??

Junkeymonkey is quite right. Basically the drive could possibly last for a long time, but if the noise is not normal, then there's clearly something that's not OK (especially if it's overheating), even if that "thing" doesn't damage the platters or any other parts of the drive. I'd suggest that you try the RMA procedure with the reseller you bought it from and hope that they agree to replace the drive so that you don't have to worry about it.
Basically if you decide to keep it as a storage HDD or it turns out that it can't be RMAed, I'd recommend that you check the HDD's health from time to time, so that you're not caught red-handed someday and lose valuable data. Note that this does not exclude having backups of your most valuable files.
