GF's Economy Build Advice

Hey Guys, need some build advice!

GF is in need of a new computer, she currently has a tiny little Ideacentre Q700, its got a terrible LGA 775 dual core and is slower than hell at this point. DDR2, etc, its bad. She liked it because it’s so cute but, it isn’t cutting it. I got it for free so no loss. I think I’ll use it to make a kitten router. Anyway on to the build…

She doesn’t do much on it, word processing, research, movies, etc. She has a tendency to keep dozens of tabs open for projects and we also use her computer to watch Netflix or to stream movies off our NAS on a larger TV in the same room. A big thing is that we keep her PC pretty much perpetually on, so I’d like to keep that going, I understand a modern PC will boot in seconds but, lets just design it with the intent of always on.

All large files, downloads, and storage of any kind are sent to our NAS which is redundant and I can manage all that for her. Storage is of no concern, we have tons of it.

**Must be mITX**

I’m thinking my best bet is
G3258 In a B85 With a GTX 650 (evga refurb) and 8gb of RAM
That puts me at 70+65+60+70=$265
I still need a PSU and an SSD but we really don’t need to worry about those for the purpose of the base build, they won’t really change.

See, $265 is already kind of high for a work station IMO. Plus it’s a dual core, while I don’t think a quad is really necessary but would be nice.

Have you guys seen the AM1 stuff?
AM1 Mobo
Athalon 5350 Kabini quad core
8gb of RAM
That puts me at 30+55+70=$155 super cheap. And while it would bring her into DDR3, USB 3, SATA III, it still leaves a lot to be desired on the processing side on paper. Anyone have any experience with these in a work station setting?

I could go FM2, but the slight increase in cost pushes me closer to the G3258 anyway. I guess I could save the $60 on a GPU but eh.

I guess the other benefit of having an LGA1150 itx mobo is that we could upgrade her CPU and GPU and she could have a decent PC later on if she really wanted it.

I guess, am I missing any cheap CPUs? I don’t really want to go Phenom of FX due to the power consumption and heat.

I would do something like this. I left case out because that is such a personal preference.

You could honestly just throw a SSD in there and see how far that takes you. If that's not enough of a performance increase you can always repurpose the SSD in a new build.

Reference: my gf has an acer aspire from 2010 built around a pentium dual core 2ghz and 4gb ram. Installed a Crucial BX100 250GB (replaced 500GB hitachi junk drive) and it's way faster than the day she bought it and prolonged her from needing to buy a new pc for several years, for what she uses it for.

+1
My in laws were like "We need a new computer", I was there one weekend and threw in a SSD. Have heard nothing but good things about their computer since. I did do a complete windows xp install. They don't want to move off of XP.

…I guess I could go with just an SSD. But really, it would be limited by the fact that it’s SATA I… and IDE… seems like kind of a waste. Would be running at significantly less than half speed.

But honestly I am in System forum, explicitly mentioned not to worry about the SSD or storage, and that I wanted to build a new pc.
By posting a bunch of stuff about SSDs you have effectively pushed me to the bottom of the forum posts that will receive attention from experts. We all know SSDs improve perceived performance greatly, but in this case, it was explicitly disregarded.

I’m looking for system advice, in the system forum. CPU and Mobo combinations… Recommending storage is like suggesting I get her a mechanical keyboard to improve her typing performance; it would dramatically improve, but it’s not relevant.

Additionally, I mentioned it must be ITX, and that I had very little interest in FM2 given their increased cost with minimal increase in performance vs just getting a discrete economy GPU. Yet I get a post that features an A8 on a micro ATX, I mean guys… cmon. Shameless.

No best answers to any of you! lol No mentions of alternatives to the G3258 :( Nothing regarding its performance vs a quad core, nothing about it compared to the super low power AM1 set I linked :(

I'm trying to save you time, money, and hassle by my recommendation of trying a SSD first. Believe it or not when everything Windows and your computer is doing first starts from a slow HDD, the rest of the system runs accordingly slow.

I wouldn't call it a waste if you decide to use that drive in a new build.

For shame that we mentioned replacing the individually slowest component in any given system.
